A Taste of Killarney - Part II

When we met last, we’d started our journey of bringing you a little “Taste of Killarney” history as you began planning future travel to this magnificent country in 2021. With the new year upon us and the basics under your belts, Killarney Guided Tours now continues our series as promised, with a look at what to do and where to consider exploring with us on “Your Tour - Your Trail”™. We hope you enjoy Part II of our ongoing series about this wonderful and diverse area in the SouthWest of Ireland.

In Part I of our series we briefly discussed the immense Killarney National Park, with its 26000 acres of flora and fauna to explore. Although Killarney and the Park offer a distinctive combination of mountains, lakes, woods and waterfalls all waiting for privately guided touring, there is so much more to see and do while on tour with us. The focal point of the park is surely Muckross House and its Garden, however, it is from there we can explore on more in-depth tours of not only the National Park but the surrounding areas. While many will be lined up, bumper to bumper along the Ring of Kerry and in Dingle town, each of which are not to be missed by first time visitors, there truly is so much more to explore in County Kerry itself including:

  • Gap of Dunloe
  • Torc Waterfall
  • Ross Castle
  • Ladies View
  • Muckross Abbey
  • Endless trails in the forest
  • Fishing on the rivers and lakes
  • Boat tours to Inisfallen Island and the Lakes

No mention of Killarney can be complete without uttering the word GOLF! With its top notch accommodation and restaurants, Killarney remains the golf lovers’ ideal base for a dedicated golfing holiday or one which merely incorporates a round or two. Particularly because Killarney is surrounded by the most beautiful golf courses in the world within short drives, the thought of combining first-class golf with first-class touring, night life and cuisine is simply irresistible to many of our guests. What more could your own private group want? Golfers happy, non-golfers happy. Since 2012, Killarney Guided Tours has perfected combining timely, luxury transport to and from your chosen golf courses with dedicated drivers taking great care of both golfers and non-golfers alike during the entirety of your vacation. With tee times at all courses in the Southwest of Ireland now bookable on line, and high quality clubs available for rent at each course if you don’t wish to drag your golf bag across the world, a dream vacation for your entire group has never been easier. Top notch courses for you to consider in the region include:

  • Killarney Golf and Fishing Club
  • Tralee (Barrow)
  • Dooks
  • Waterville Links
  • Ballybunnion
  • The Old Head of Kinsale
  • Lahinch
  • Beaufort
  • Kenmare

In addition to first class golf and scenery, no visit to Killarney would be complete without enjoying truly fabulous cuisine. The true “Taste of Killarney” includes enjoying Killarney’s local cuisine and the area’s very own style of cooking. The region’s culinary style has evolved over the centuries and has been influenced by many different cultures. Killarney’s own legacy farmers produce the very best of crops and animals, supplying the best of the best to Killarney’s restaurants and shops. The clean Atlantic waters and local rivers provide the delicious fresh fish you’ll enjoy if you so choose on your visit. Of course, no meal is complete without the flavorful local potatoes, central to any taste of Killarney meal experience. Some of the most popular dishes you might taste and toast with a pint or one of our local whiskies include:

  • Irish Stew
  • Bacon and Cabbage
  • Boxty (delicious Irish potato pancakes)
  • Local, freshly caught fish and chips
  • Colcannon (a delightful, creamy mixture of mashed potato and kale or cabbage)
  • Fillet of tender Killarney beef

“Hospitality” has always been compulsory in Killarney, and food has been part of the social fabric of the region for generations. Many of the listed accommodations in Part I of our series have truly excellent restaurants, however, here are some additional local choices to browse and consider patronizing while on tour with us:

  • Stonechat
  • Rozzers
  • The Mad Monk
  • Bricin
